Columbia, SC, If you are legally qualified to own and carry a handgun in South Carolina, we can help you meet South Carolina's training requirement for the state's Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) and qualify for the NRA's Basic Pistol Certificate at the same time.

We can do even better than just help you get certificates. We can help you learn to actually use handguns, shotguns, and rifles for effective self-defense.

Our teaching methods start with the basics and focus on your needs--even if you are a newcomer to firearms, have limited experience, or are a little fearful or apprehensive. We have decades of experience helping people learn and we enjoy doing it.

We teach ordinary citizens who recognize their obligation to take primary responsibility for their own lives and their family's. Civilians need a much different perspective from law enforcement and the military. We teach from the civilian perspective.

So if you're an ordinary citizen who wants a South Carolina CWP and the ability to protect your own life and the lives of your family, you've reached a good place. You're who we teach and that's what we teach. We don't teach warriors.

South Carolina CWP

We offer the required South Carolina CWP training class at least once a month, on the first Saturday of every month, in the Columbia area. Consult your calendar for their exact dates. We also hold additional CWP classes and we can hold special group classes in your location if it's in the Columbia area and suitable for classroom use.

E-mail us for a list of currently-scheduled classes and an application. Please include your local telephone number(s) so we can call you to answer your questions, learn your special needs, and offer suggestions.

We'll give you the South Carolina CWP application and help you fill it out, line by line.

Our course is is approved by SLED to meet the training requirement for South Carolina's CWP. It also incorporates the NRA's Basic Pistol course, recognized by other states as meeting their training requirement for a concealed weapons permit. When you satisfactorily complete our CWP class you receive the NRA Basic Pistol Certificate as well as our certification for the South Carolina CWP training requirement.

With our NRA Basic Pistol Certificate you can apply immediately for Florida's non-resident CWP, which allows you to carry in more states than the South Carolina CWP, including Georgia. We'll give you Florida's application and help you fill it out too.

Defensive Handgun Refresher

We want you to succeed and we help you achieve success. Our Defensive Handgun Refreshers are short courses for people who don't know how to use a handgun, or who are apprehensive about using them, or who already have, or have qualified for, a Concealed Weapons Permit and want to brush up or improve their skills.

Handgun shooting is a perishable skill. It declines unless you practice well and fairly often. So our Defensive Handgun Refresher helps you correct problems and maintain and improve your skills. If you want to advance your pistol or revolver abilities--or if you simply forgot some of what you once knew how to do, a Defensive Handgun Refresher course is for you.

We'll diagnose your problems and help you correct them in our Defensive Handgun Refresher, guide you towards how to do more effective practice on your own, and probably introduce you to some new skills too.

Remember that it's not a course in target shooting or competition. You can take this Defensive Handgun Refresher as many times as you want and as often as you feel the need.

About Us

Paladin Services was founded in 1996. Joseph and Janet Katz are the lead instructors. Each of them is a SLED-certified instructor and is NRA-certified to teach pistol, rifle, and shotgun classes. Both are certified NRA Range Safety Officers and are certified by the NRA to instruct people who Refuse To Be A Victim.

Both Joe and Janet have been trained in the Judicious Use of Deadly Force personally by Massad Ayoob, the renowned expert and expert witness in that field. For years they've trained extensively in the defensive use of firearms with master instructors such as Ayoob, Chuck Taylor, Louis Awerbuck, and Randy Cain. Both Joe and Janet are sustaining members of the South Carolina Police Chiefs Association. They both support and help the South Carolina Law Enforcement Assistance Program. Janet is on the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Chaplaincy for Law Enforcement. Janet also has been featured in Women and Guns magazine.

By now you should realize that we especially welcome newcomers, women, couples, mature people, and those of diverse backgrounds in all our classes. We can give you individual instruction or teach special groups by prior arrangement.

What you see here are some details of just two of the courses we offer. We also offer other defensive firearms courses, including the NRA Personal Protection In The Home and Personal Protection Outside The Home as well as other practical courses. We'll teach new firearms users the basic shooting competence they need in each course: new people are always welcome in our classes.
